Colorado Proposition 135 is just more hateful rhetoric targeting the LGBTQIA+ community

I have repeatedly seen a friend share a post on their social media page for a nonprofit organization called Protect Kids Colorado, posts specifically about Colorado Proposition 135.

Proposition 135, which is on the ballot for this year’s general election, simply put, would “prohibit healthcare professionals from performing or providing surgeries to persons under age 18 for the purpose of altering biological sex characteristics, defined as ‘treatment in response to a minor’s perception of sex or gender’; and prohibit the use of state or federal funds, Medicaid reimbursement, or insurance coverage to pay for such procedures.’”

The information my friend has presented in her comments specifically states that “schools are doing the grooming, promoting & encouraging of gender transition…” She has made it clear that she believes that procedures are being done without proper counseling and protocol and that it all amounts to “child abuse.”

When I have pushed back on where the proof is that these alleged surgical procedures are taking place in the forum she claims, she has refused to provide any proofs, only insisting that “it does happen because there are lawsuits.” A friend of hers then came on and injected herself into the conversation and said that she shouldn’t have to do my homework for me. Well, I am not the one making a statement that is not believed. SHE is. So she is the one that really needs to provide the proof, no?

Well, because I am always open to learning something that I don’t know, I DID look for the evidence of what she said. And what I found, and provided to her, was proofs of the exact opposite, from a 2024 study from Harvard Medical School.

So while she continued to share additional posts about Colorado Proposition 135 for Protect Kids Colorado, I just happened to see a documentary at the Longmont Museum called Banned Together. The documentary was an exceptionally well-done film about three young high school students fighting the school district’s banning of books.

The major player in this country fighting to ban books is a political nonprofit called Moms for Liberty. In the documentary, it was revealed that Moms for Liberty has a far-reaching membership of people who attend board meetings wearing organization t-shirts and attack board members while cutting down teachers and advisors who promote the curriculums that include some of the classics on their organization’s personal “banned list.”

Also revealed was how the Moms for Liberty organization is financially supported. When confronted, they claimed that they survive on the sales of their t-shirts. But that made no mathematical sense. Then when accessing the organization’s 990 form, there was a nice little gift of $1,000,000 from…The Heritage Foundation…author or Project 2025.

Getting back to Protect Kids Colorado…the President of the Board of Directors is Kevin Lundberg, former member…Republican member…of the Colorado state legislature.

Kevin Lundberg is very aligned with the Federalist Society and, what else, The Heritage Foundation. A simple Google search of Lundberg brings up his far-right extremist views and agendas. Because he didn’t agree with the policies of home schooling organizations…he formed his own home school association, CHEC (Christian Home School Educators of Colorado) and he remains a board member emeritus. CHEC maintains extremist views and Lundberg himself has hosted rallies at the capitol that exhibit and promote bigoted anti-LGBTQIA+ views. He has also been a major player in the Erin for Parental Rights conspiracies…which prompted Colorado Proposition 135. Erin of Erin for Parental Rights is Erin Lee…another board member of Protect Kids Colorado.

Ask yourself why this would need to be put forth for legislation. Why are people so concerned with this issue…and why are they presenting information that is not true?

No surgical procedures are being conducted without the knowledge of the parents.

No school is “grooming” any student for a gender change. That is not a part of the curriculum. Yes, schools are promoting “inclusion” and are teaching “acceptance” of each child’s desires with regard to their individuality.

Keeping confidentiality for a student, maintaining their privacy, is not only an issue of trust, but it just may be an issue of safety. How does anyone know what is going on in the home, outside of school hours? If you are concerned about child abuse, as you claim, then why are you not concerned about the child abuse that just may be taking place in the home? Is there no need to take precautions and care with regard to that?

The fact is that Proposition 135 and all of the rhetoric that is presented around it is nothing more than a propaganda tool to spew hate and bigotry against the LGBTQIA+ community and family members.
